In the Land of the Yard, where the green grasses grow,
Lived a dog with a coat and a wonderful glow!
A German Shepherd, so noble and grand,
The smartest young pup in the whole of the land.
But listen, my friend! To keep him quite cheery,
You must follow these rules, or he’ll get very weary.
For a Shepherd has brains and a Shepherd has brawn,
He’ll want to go zoom-ing from dusk until dawn!
Rule One: The Great Move-Around
He can’t sit all day like a bump on a log,
That isn’t the way for a Shepherd-y dog!
He needs Exercise! Yes! A walk or a run,
Or a game of “Go-Fetch” in the bright morning sun.
If he doesn’t get moving, he might start to chew
On your homework, your hat, or your left-footed shoe!
Rule Two: The Brain-Tingle
His head is a factory of “How?” and of “Why?”
He’s cleverer, truly, than most other guys.
So give him a Task! Give him something to do!
Like “Sit!” or “Stay put!” or “Go find my blue shoe!”
A bored Shepherd dog is a dog full of tricks,
He’d rather learn puzzles than just chasing sticks.
Rule Three: The Fuzz-Frazzle
His fur is a forest! It’s thick and it’s deep,
It falls on the rug while you’re fast in your sleep.
So grab up a Brush and a comb and a pail,
And scrub from his nose to the tip of his tail!
You’ll brush out the tangles, you’ll brush out the dirt,
Until he’s so shiny it might even hurt!
Rule Four: The Best Part
But the most-est best rule, in the House of the Hound,
Is the Love and the Cuddles that must go around.
He’ll watch you and guard you with ears standing tall,
The most loyal friend-beast of them, one and all!
So feed him good kibble, and give him a pat,
He’s better than gold (and he’s better than a cat!).
With a wag and a woof and a lick on your face,
A German Shepherd will brighten your place!
